The Week at a cheap ass college

OK, a little back-ground is in order on the school that I attend. According to the UBER GOD Wiki :”National College of Business and Technology is a private, for-profit career college operating in the southeastern and east-central United States. It is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools.

In 2006, National enrolled about 7,000 students at 20 campuses in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Indiana. The various campuses award credentials ranging from vocational certificates to the Master of Business Administration degree. Subjects taught include accounting, medical transcription, coding and assisting, pharmacy, paralegal, various computer disciplines, hospitality and tourism, broadcasting technology, and emergency medicine technology.

The institution began in 1886 in Roanoke, Virginia, where the home campus remains today. It was originally known as National Business College, and later absorbed two Kentucky career colleges, Kentucky College of Business and Fugazzi College. NCBT’s latest campus, in Memphis, Tennessee opened in 2006. During that year it was also recognized by the Better Business Bureau as a finalist for the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

The majority of National students receive some form of student assistance, usually in the form of federal student loans, although some scholarship and grant monies are also awarded. Particular stress is placed on preparing students to effectively enter the workplace, and most faculty are practicing professionals in their fields. Working adults wishing to further their education are also accommodated with evening and weekend class schedules.

In mid-2006, the institution announced that it will begin a transition to the shorter name of simply National College.”

Now for my definition: Clears throat and….”National college is a cheap ass college that my wife and I could graduate from quickly and with a high post graduation student employment placement percentage. The bad points of the school are many and varied: Poor quality teachers, who think they are doing you a favor by teaching to the person with the lowest intelligence in the class (Which is saying quiet a lot considering that it seems that the Average IQ is somewhere in the low 70’s), Loud obnoxious students who will try to veer the teacher away from whatever lesson that they are teaching in order to spout their biased and most times bigoted views and questions to the rest of the class, computers that would have seen better days in the late 90’s, and of course the office delays in processing your paper work for you student aid, so that when you really need your residuals you are forced to wait “Just a few more days”. Not that everything about the school is bad, however: Their are at least 2 GREAT teachers who work well with what they have and I feel that I can genuinely learn from them.

In this the CFA blog, at least once a week I will vent and let you guys know what went on at this school, at least from my classes and perhaps campus-wide if something HUGE happened in the world of idiocy. Lets begin, shall we?

Monday March 17th 2008 8:30am – 12:30pm History 290

OK, first let me give you a little insight as to the professor of this class. He is one of the GREAT teachers that I mentioned above, one of the ones that I feel that I can learn from. His name is Eric Volgler, a retired industrial something or the other (I can’t exactly remember his exact title before he retired), he has plenty of money from his investments and retirement, so the point is that he isn;t teaching because he needs the money, he really enjoys it and wants to share his knowledge with others. He has a very straight forward teaching style and it is difficult to get him off topic, even for a second. Mr. Volgler is primarily the business teacher, as a matter of fact I have him on Fridays for Marketing, but he has an intense love of history and likes to teach that when he can. Being primarily a business teacher, he takes a look at history from an economical point of view. However, he teaches history with an emphasis on the people that made it not just a list of dates and hard facts, though they are there as well.

OK so on Monday, things are sailing along, with Mr. Volgler teaching about the era immediately  following WWII, when this Rather large, rather  smelly lady, who sits in the back of class pipes up with the statement that the Europeans live better than us and think they are better than the US. This throws Mr. Volgler for a loop and he ask why, she thinks this. She then says, after much moronic hemming and hawing, that its because of the buildings that they live and work in and the cloths they wear…… WHAT?!?!  Mr Volgler goes on to explain, rather calmly, that Europe is older than us and that the buildings have been around for a long time in general.

After a bit the second Truman election is discussed and another ignorant lady in the back says, and I quote “Obama shouldn’t be president, because he is” and I shit you not here, “One of ‘THOSE’ people what that attacked us”, now without talking too much about my own ploitics here (Thats another post for another time), let me say that this incensed me no end! I am sitting there trying to keep quite in class and not say anything to this woman, and I am Vibrating, I mean I am literaly shaking I am so outraged. The discussion that followed is lost in a red haze to me, but after a bit I couldn’t hold it in any more, I turned to the “Lady” and said “So… what you are saying is that because his father was a Muslim, he shouldn’t be President, uh huh. DO YOU KNOW WHO ELSE THEY SAID SHOULD BE PRESIDENT BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS? JOHN F. KENNEDY! Thats who!”

The ignorance of this woman confounded me no end! DO people like this still exist? Obviously, becausee she was there FUCK!

The rest of the day was shot because of this crap.

Microsoft Office Thursday 8:30am – 1:30pm

Finally, a class that has something to do with my major. Our professor, Mr. Avery is another of those GREAT teachers at the school, so now we have both of them, the rest are as useful as silly putty as a contraceptive. Its a good thing they are the ones who teach most of my major classes, eh?

During the course of the class, Avery informed us that he was recently divorced. As this is a college with a HIGH percentage of single moms, and sluts who think they can sleep their way to a good grade, this was welcomed like a free blow job to a virgin. No fewer than 3 of the women in class immediately offered to fix him dinner or have him look at the computers at their houses. WOW, he could get some booty out of this, the only problem is the women who offered are better suited to trying, and failing, to seduce a freshly bought dildo than actually trying to get laid.

Marketing Friday 8:30am – 12:30pm

Volgler again.

GREAT class, for what he teaches, not for the morons who are in it.

The class is a business college, so you would think that the people in it would have some idea of the type of business they would like to run or work in, and would have some idea as to whether their ideas for a business would work. WRONG!!! There is a guy in their, who attends with his mom no less, who wants to open a comic shop in one of the poorest counties in the state. Not to mention that the average age in this county is Approximately 50+, not the best market for a comic shop. And not to be nasty, but this guy and his mom look like Hoggish Greedly from Captain planet.

The first thing we did in class was to take an exam covering the last weeks lesson, no surprise there. My wife and I finished the test and he told us to take a break and come back in for the days lesson. We walked outside, smoked our death nails, made fun of people and went back in. Sitting in the row ahead of us was a guy who had walked into class 30 minutes late. Everyone else was finished with the exam and waiting to take notes. Mr. Volgler informed this guy that he had to take the exam and the we were going on  ahead of him.

The jerk then pushes his test away and says, “I’m not taking this Fucking exam.” Volgler looks astonished and ask him what he said, he repeated it with an emphasis on the fucking part. Volgler, all 5 foot 6 of him takes 3 steps toward him and tells him to get out of his class, the guy gets up and curses at Volgler a bit more and leaves. Volgler, the pro that he is, goes ahead  . HE IS AMAZING!!! I would have beat the shit out of the kid and faced what may have come.

So… there you have it, a week at my cheap ass college.
